How much does an Umbraco 13 to 17 upgrade cost?

The short answer

£8,999 plus VAT, fixed. That is the whole price for taking a typical Umbraco 13 site to Umbraco 17: not a day rate estimate that grows, not a starting-from figure with a long list of exclusions in small print. Fixed pricing is possible here because the job has a known shape and I have done it many times, across upgrade paths stretching back to Umbraco 4. The deadline matters as much as the price: Umbraco 13 security support ends on 14 December 2026, after which unpatched sites carry real risk. If your build is unusually large or heavily customised, I will tell you before we start, not by invoice.

A fixed price, on purpose

Most upgrade quotes are day rate estimates wearing a suit. The number you are given is the number the agency hopes it will take, and the risk of being wrong sits entirely with you. I price the Umbraco 13 to 17 upgrade at a fixed £8,999 plus VAT because after doing this jump repeatedly the shape of the work is predictable to me, and it seems fair that the person who can predict it carries the risk.

What the price includes

The upgrade itself: taking your Umbraco 13 codebase through to 17, updating packages to compatible versions, dealing with the breaking changes, and testing that the site behaves as it did before. This is development work, not a tooling pass; automated upgrade scripts get you part of the way and the remainder is exactly where projects stall. If your site is genuinely atypical, a very large multi-site install or something with heavy bespoke integrations, I will say so up front and quote accordingly before anything is committed.

Why the deadline is real

Umbraco 13 security support ends on 14 December 2026. From that date, newly discovered vulnerabilities in 13 do not get patched. For anyone in a regulated sector, or anyone whose insurers ask questions about supported software, that is not a soft deadline. Capacity across the whole Umbraco ecosystem will tighten as it approaches, the same way it does before every end-of-life date, and late buyers pay in stress even when they do not pay in money.

Where to see the numbers

The upgrade price sits alongside my day rate and retainer plans on the pricing page. If you are not sure which version you are on or how big the job is, send me the site and I will tell you what you are looking at, without charge and without a hard sell.
